"I followed the dancers in a night of harvest festivities and rapidly drew them as they danced. The Zocalo is the term used for the city plaza and in Oaxaca is one of Mexico's finest! The town is dream world and worth a visit. Steeped in indigenous arts and crafts of the highest order and surrounded by archeological ruins unsurpassed in the Americas. This is a large full sized canvas in which I attempted to convey the spirit of the festival in concert with the actual painting of the canvas. The strokes are large and bold like the Mexican brass band that was spilling its sound like light into the Zocalo. The gazebo becomes a kind of luminous shell drawing people to its center like moths to lamp. It holds the center of a cultural universe and serves to bring people together nightly to express their most human qualities through dance and art and food and music. The wonder is that it is a daily ritual. We have nothing like it here and yet in Mexico there in not a town or village without one. It's human drama forced me to celebrate it in this large canvas."R |
